Minnesota-based photographer and journalist Josh P. Roberts was born and raised in New York, coming to the Midwest as an adult. His freelance journalism career began while still in high school, during which he wrote for newspapers such as the New York Times, and helped put him through university. He completed a master’s at the University of Toronto (in the history and philosophy of science) and went through a Ph.D. program at the U of Minnesota (with thesis work in ocular immunology) before returning to journalism. He is the author of two books and hundreds of newspaper, magazine, and electronic articles for both consumer and B2B audiences. He lives in the Twin Cities with his wife, two kids, and a menagerie of animals.

Although he sometimes took pictures to accompany his words, Roberts’ photo career began in earnest when he interviewed Bob Gallo (the co-discoverer of HIV) for The Scientist, and was paid to take his picture as well. He was then asked to profile an American Society for Gene Therapy meeting for
Minnesota Meetings and Events, and was offered more to shoot than he was to write. He has since taken most of the photo courses Minneapolis Community and Technical College has to offer, set up his own studio (currently in the Ivy Arts Building), and pursues photography as both an art form and a business.

For his art, Roberts is particularly interested in exploring the way that light and shadow can subtly or dramatically sculpt a three-dimensional form into a two-dimensional image. He shoots digitally, and generally prefers to do most of the heavy lifting in-camera – meaning that very little manipulation is done to the images once the shutter is snapped.

Roberts is available to shoot your wedding, event, and editorial content. He accepts commissions for fine art portraiture, family portraits, and executive headshots, both on location and at his studio. He is more than willing to travel if expenses are paid.
